AmeriCorps Promote Program
AmeriCorps is a national service program that was established in 1993. Since its inception, more than 250,000 Americans ages seventeen years and older have served to meet needs in their communities. Our former MOM- AmeriCorps Program had over 225 members who mentored children in the Coachella Valley. Our new AmeriCorps program is called AmeriCorps Promote. Its service focuses on literacy in kindergarten through third grade of seven Coachella Valley Unified School District’s elementary schools - Cesar Chavez Elementary, Coral Mountain Academy, Mecca Elementary, Mountain Vista Elementary, Peter Pendleton Elementary, Saul Martinez Elementary and Westside. Twenty-one AmeriCorps members tutor students in these schools in order to increase the students’ reading and English fluency proficiency. In addition to the classroom tutoring, the members also serve children after school, helping with tutoring and enrichment activities through the 21st Century after school program, as well as recruiting community volunteers to work in the program and participating in community service projects.
AmeriCorps “broadened my perspective regarding how other cultural groups live. I saw our shared challenges and concerns regarding life here.” |
“With my experience in AmeriCorps it helped me become aware of my community’s needs, what my community can offer such as various programs, community events and support groups.”
